Evolving AGZ, The State of the Zoo
The 1 year anniversary of AGZ has been an eventful time. The big events that come to mind: The first official AGZ public appearance, the two-person project became a one person project again, and various fun experiments (sketch book). The first year of AGZ was a personal experiment in sharing a story on a regular basis. This next year is going to be about expanding that foundation. I have a few ideas and I've mentioned "AGZ experiments" but haven't shared anything specific. I've been trying to live by the "have something to show before announcing" rule. I'll set that aside for the moment and share a glimpse into what I'm planning. My goals for the next year:
  • Publish comic content three days per week.
    • Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays
  • Occasionally publish other content (videos, sketches)
    • Other days of the week.
  • AGZ Comics will come in two main flavors. Main Story and Parody. Did you know that parody roughly translated from latin means counter-song (counter as in oppose in a different direction)?
Of course, I should stress that this is a goal. Multiple episodes per week will be something I build up to over time. It also may cause the comic to be more manga style black and white or grayscale shaded. I'll to my best to keep the Monday episode in color. Speaking of the Monday episode, it will remain top priority, then Wednesday, then Friday. When will the two flavors of comics begin? My plan is to finish season one of the AGZ main story then introduce the parody stuff. Season one is shaping up to be another six to ten episodes. AGZ is a young comic growing and finding readers such as you. Thank you for reading AGZ! If you're enjoying it, I can use your assistance in getting get the word out! Email, blog, social network or good old fashioned talk and/or sing about it. :)
Episode 51 - The Most Important Gig Bag
The members of Resonant Dojo are arriving at the Soundhouse Saloon for their first gig. They need to make sure they’ve brought all their gear. Is there anything missing?
AGZ's Report On New England Webcomics Weekend
As I said before, it was awesome. neww-thoughts-s.png Of course, awesome is in the eye of the beholder. Hop into my eye for a while and we can share a brief look back at last weekend's event. M'Eye Perspective This has been a long time coming for me. I recently started serious research as to what comic related event(s) I should attend this year. No offense to my homeland of Minnesota, but there's not that much from what I can tell that has a great place for a young but seriously invested web comic. Then from out of nowhere came the Webcomics Weekend announcement which later became New England Webcomics Weekend (or #neww on twitter). It was almost too perfect. Many people have shared great stories of what happened then. Essentially what began as a few webcomics artists gathering for fun rapidly expanded to be a full on fledgeling convention. Then the reality sets in. Holy crap. I'm going to meet face to face these people I've been reading about, listening to, observing their sites, reading their stories, and learn a ton from all the time!!! What was it like? There was an air of electric many directional excitement... a dense population of fans and creators all focused on the topic of webcomics feeding off the shared energy. So much thought about it, so much passion and focus on it. It was intoxicating. One huge source of information and entertainment in creating web comics is Halpixel's Web Comics Weekly podcast. All of those guys were there, I met most of them and bought a copy of their book (which I stayed up reading most of it Saturday night). Honestly listening to that podcast colored my experience quite a bit. I'd keep thinking about their anecdotes about how convention attendees both fans and budding artists act in both good and annoying ways. All I can say is that if I've made a fool of myself I hope I did so in a solid manner to serve as a either inspiration or lesson to other creators in a future WCW podcast. Various Highlights Kate and I hung out quite a bit with "Kenard" the creator of Rick the Stick! It was tons of fun talking shop with Ken and sharing perspective on all the NEWW happenings. By the way: Thanks Ken! I secured my first signed book from a conference ever by none other than Lar deSouza of Least I Could Do, then the next day when things were just getting started I had the opportunity to chat with him and ask a bunch of questions. Awesome. Here I am at the Web vs. Print vs. a Bear panel (picture from this great post-NEWW article). 'Twas a funny and interesting panel in which there was some sort of living teddy bear/dog creature with a cone on its head. So cool to see Art Geek Zoo mentioned in an article Monday morning after the event. Also cool, the article mentions Kate and how supportive she was. What can I say, I'm a fortunate man and she's awesome and happens to naturally be WAY more outgoing than I. Also, Kate was a volunteer at the NEWW event, Thanks Kate! You Rock! Another highlight: getting a signed copy of How to Make Webcomics, the book by the creators of Starslip, Sheldon, PvP, and Evil-Inc. Sunday I picked up a copy of Sheldon: Now 62% More Awesome! It's signed by Dave Kellett and he made a sweet sketch of Flaco inside too! Another highlight, I have to admit, is that I was honored and pumped to hear various artists feedback on the AGZ shirt. Specifically the new Pick and Crunchy long sleeve black. People dug it and mentioned recognizing the characters. :) The Aftermath Somehow I felt both really inspired and really sad after the event. It was the strangest thing. Perhaps it's a sense of loss from being in such a dense region of creativity. I've pondered it this week and I'm still not sure why. Also I noticed throughout the week that other attendees had similar affect, then there's the whole "almost everyone that went to NEWW got a cold" thing, but that's barely worth mentioning. What I am sure of: I'm totally going back next year.
Rob's Sketchbook - Kitty On A Blanket
Sleepy kitty... why are you so dang cute? Whichever the case, you make a great sketch subject when sleeping since you aren't running around acting all crazy. Far easier than those common hard-to-sketch times such as fighting your roommate cat and when you're hunting the Wii pointer hand on the video game display.
IDSAT Ep 5 - The Draw-en-ing!
A fresh episode of I Draw Stuff and Talk, where I share some music and commentary over the speed-drawing video of AGZ Episode 46 - Past Tense! I'll be taking a break from the IDSAT episodes, they've been great practice. I've received some great feedback! What am I going to do with all that free time? As I've mentioned previously there are other experiments in the works for additional AGZ content. I hope to have something ready for next Wednesday to fill the same experimental time-slot that IDSAT was filling.
Webcomics Weekend in a Word: Awesome
Yep, Awesome. I'll post more thoughts soon! For now, I just wanted to share a quick thank you to the hosts of the event, it was incredible to meet so many artists and cool fans of webcomics! http://questionablecontent.net/ http://www.dieselsweeties.com/ http://www.octopuspie.com/
Episode 50 - The Jam In The Box
Story The day before Resonant Dojo’s Grade-earning Gig, it’s time to decide what to play… and get ready to play it! Behind the Scenes I’ll be traveling back home from Web Comics Weekend by the time you read this! Can’t wait to see and learn and meet tons of creators and readers of web comics! Stay tuned for post-conference update. Likely I’ll make that a topic in this week’s I Draw Stuff and Talk episode.
Rob's Sketchbook Bunny Puns And Hides
So many puns. This bunny Punned, then hid. Why'd he hide? He thought no bunny would find him. The word bunny is like pun nitroglycerin unstable and full of explosive fun potential. Especially so if you just keep swaping the "body" part of a word, the puns just keep rolling along. Somebunny, anybunny, bunny of evidence, and so forth. Though in this case, the puns keep hopping along. Time to stop punning and get some rest to be ready for my day of travel to the NEWW (also known as Web Comics Weekend)! Have a great weekend, perhaps I'll tweet text or a picture now and then from the adventure. Either way, stay tuned for Monday's AGZ episode!
Next IDSAT and Schedule News
It looks like I won't have the time this week to finish the video and sound edit for the current I Draw Stuff and Talk, be sure to look for episode 5 of IDSAT next Wednesday. In other schedule news, I'm working on Monday's AGZ episode before I head to the Web Comics Weekend event! Rest assured I'll have it posted/scheduled for Monday as normal. Friday's Sketchbook post will be good to go as well. Finally, I'm hoping to do some twittering while at the event! Keep watch here and at my twitter user: PersistenceLair. :)
Episode 49 Welcome To My Night Scare
Story As the band's t-shirt making session ends, Pick and Crunchy head back to their dorm to get some rest. Pick is having a bit of trouble in the land of sleep... Behind the Scenes You may notice a few changes going on over the next few days/weeks. I've been making updates to the AGZ store already, more to come! Other changes are coming too, can't say exactly when it will be ready but I have a new version of this site in the works. It's time to get rid of the came-with-the-frame/barely changed from the defaults to something more stylized. Comic Press is really awesome, nothing against how awesome it is, just looking forward to a more custom feel. :)
Rob's Sketchbook Zombie And Puppy Playing Fetch
Happy Friday everyone! To commemorate the release of Resident Evil 5, I offer this sketch of a happy zombie and puppy playing fetch. I'm a sucker for zombie related entertainment, I even like fast zombies whereas some people I know prefer the slow moving variety. Fast or slow moving aside, it occurs to me that a zombie infestation doesn't have to be entirely bad. Isn't there room in the zombie fantasy world for zombies to have fun too? In fact, if I come across a zombie pleasantly playing fetch in RE5, I'm going to let it be. That's a cool zombie.
AGZ - IDSAT Ep 4 - Talking Pictures
I present another video episode of I Draw Stuff and Talk now with talking pictures! :)
AGZ Schedule
I've mentioned that various AGZ experiments are in progress. The experiments are different creative things about AGZ. I promise to do my best to keep you posted, even if it's an experimental piece of AGZ that doesn't make it's scheduled time. Which reminds me, last week I didn't get the IDSAT episode out, tried for Sunday (didn't quite finish). That may happen from time to time with the more experimental things. Here's the current weekly flow of AGZ content: Monday: Full Episode of AGZ (solid schedule) Wednesday: IDSAT (very experimental, not yet solid schedule) Friday and/or Saturday: An Interesting Sketch from Rob's Sketchbook (solid schedule) Do you have any comments or ideas about that stuff? Feel free to post via the blog comments or send an email to agzcomic@gmail.com.
Episode 48 The Great FÖM Divide
Story The band members of Resonant Dojo are making hand decorated shirts for their first gig. It seems not everyone enjoys the music of FÖM. Perhaps Max has a new opportunity to cause trouble? Behind the Scenes What is Max's deal anyway? :) You'll see, it'll be the subject of season two's intro/preface. Big news re: the AGZ Team. Art Geek Zoo a one man operation once again, Pete Gilbertson is moving on from AGZ. I wanted to not surprise you guys when season one concludes and share the news. Pete and I worked out the details and it's quite awesome that he's finished the season one script. Thank you Pete for all the great work you did on season one of AGZ! Stay Tuned as I'll certainly be posting links to any of the stuff that Pete's up to on the interwebs! Have you seen his company's YouTube Channel? It's Whetstone Films!
Rob's Sketchbook Penguin Shoryuken
From my sketch book of various oddities I present Pick Wingvey performing the Shoryuken/Dragon Punch! Why? To honor Street Fighter IV! I highly recommend it if you've ever spent time in front of a SFII or SFIII cabinet, it's a worthy sequel. A happy First Friday (everyone's favorite monthly recurring videogame holiday) to all!
Schedule News and AGZ Public Appearance
Just wanted to let you know that IDSAT episode 4 is in the process of being edited, but I'll probably not get to finish it until Sunday due to various scheduling conflicts. In other schedule news, I'll be attending the holy-crap so many web comic artists in one place at one time event: Web Comics Weekend! It looks to be a ton of fun, can't wait. I've been working on some special AGZ handouts for the freebie table, which happens to be one of the scheduling conflicts in progress. :) If you're going to be in the area of Western Massachusetts on March 20-22, stop on by!
Episode 47 False Impressionism
Story Getting ready to make the band's t-shirts Styxx and Taka seem to have a misunderstanding brewing. Behind the Scenes Did you happen to see my sketchbook post from this weekend? We're experimenting with updates 3 times per week... Monday: Episode, Wednesday: IDSAT/Video, Friday or Saturday TBD (leave us a comment for your vote) a fun/interesting sketch from my sketchbook. Other experiments are brewing too, new merch ideas and just maybe a second type of video post coming soon. As always, thanks for stopping by and Stay Tuned! -- Rob
